DESCRIPTION

Step back into one of the most exciting years in pop history - a time when the charts were filled with dancefloor anthems, global megastars and with a new wave of pop from new artists - and all on the cusp of a new Millennium. 'NOW - Yearbook 1999' celebrates an unforgettable year of hits with 82 essential tracks. Opening with one of the biggest pop hits and biggest debut hits of all time from Britney Spears with '.Baby One More Time' - the year's biggest seller. A pair of global chart-toppers are next from Christina Aguilera and Ricky Martin. Shania Twain had 1999's best-selling album with 'Come On Over' - and from it 'That Doesn't Impress Me Much' was a huge hit. New Radicals enjoyed a smash with 'You Get What You Give' and Lenny Kravitz hit #1 with 'Fly Away' - and 17 years after their last original hit, Blondie returned and scored a #1 with 'Maria'. Texas had one of their biggest hits with 'Summer Son' and Robbie Williams secured another #1 with 'She's the One'. R.E.M. released one of their most beautiful tracks, and Moby had a hit with 'Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?' - one of 8 singles from his huge selling album 'Play' - and Pet Shop Boys feature with one of their greatest, 'New York City Boy'. 1999 was a stellar year for slick R&B production and two of the best examples are up next: TLC with the massive 'No Scrubs' and Whitney Houston who returned with 'It's Not Right But It's Okay'. Great pop from Geri Halliwell leads into the Groove Armada's chill-out staple 'At the River'. and established chart stars Sting and the Pretenders come ahead of anthemic indie-pop to close Disc 1 from Semisonic and Travis with 'Why Does It Always Rain On Me?' - from their massive selling album 'The Man Who'. Both the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC enjoyed huge success around the world and open CD2 ahead of Boyzone who celebrated a 5th UK #1 with their cover of 'When the Going Gets Tough'. Vengaboys were one of the biggest pop-dance acts of the year and went to the top with 'We're Going to Ibiza!'. Lou Bega had one the year's biggest sellers with his ear-worm 'Mambo No.5 (A Little Bit Of.)' and is followed by a run of upbeat pure-pop from Steps, S Club, Atomic Kitten and Adam Rickitt, plus ballads from Westlife, 911, A1 and Billie Piper. Another Level, Len and Hepburn are joined by two Spice Girls; Emma Bunton, featuring with Tin Tin Out on 'What I Am' - and Melanie C with the title track from her debut solo album 'Northern Star'. B*Witched completed their run of four #1 singles with 'Blame It On the Weatherman' and The Corrs hit #2 with a remix of 'Runaway', and it's left to another #1 chart debut to close the disc - 'Perfect Moment' from Martine McCutcheon. CD3 celebrates the dance-floor-fillers of 1999. The line-up is massive: William Orbit, Chicane feat. Moya Brennan, Alice Deejay, Basement Jaxx, Phats & Small and The Chemical Brothers plus #1s from ATB, Fatboy Slim, Armand Van Helden feat. Duane Harden and Wamdue Project. Garage crossed over to the mainstream charts with Artful Dodger introducing Craig David with 'Re-Rewind (The Crowd Say Bo Selecta)' and Shanks & Bigfoot having a huge hit with 'Sweet Like Chocolate'. Sophisticated dance-pop nuggets from Jamiroquai and Moloko are up next before The Cardigans open the disc's closing run of alt-pop from Manic Street Preachers, Suede, Stereophonics and Terrorvision. The final disc is a hit-packed journey through some of '99's biggest pop tunes - opening with the #1 cover of 'Tragedy' from Steps alongside S Club's debut 'Bring It All Back', Five's biggest hit (and #1) 'Keep On Movin' and A1's opener 'Be the First to Believe'. Second appearances on this collection from Backstreet Boys, Vengaboys and Shania Twain lead into anthemic tracks from Cher and Tina Turner plus a hit collaboration covering 'Burning Down the House' from Tom Jones & The Cardigans. A sequence of beautiful songs is next from Roxette, Des'Ree, Gabrielle and Whitney Houston. Britney Spears followed up her debut with 'Sometimes' and Jordan Knight returned to the charts five years after his last hit with New Kids On the Block. 'Lullaby' gave Shawn Mullins an enduring radio hit and leads into the closing trio of ballads: Robbie Williams with 'Strong', Ronan Keating enjoyed his first solo #1 with 'When You Say Nothing At All' from the film 'Notting Hill' and signing off, Westlife with their third consecutive #1 in 1999 with one of their signature songs 'Flying Without Wings'. 'NOW - Yearbook 1999': A giant year for huge singles from an incredible diversity of artists - enjoy and celebrate a truly magical year in pop.
