With award season in full swing, let’s take a look at more winners, losers and other news and happenings in this week’s entertainment.
Leading with award season: Following on from the Golden Globes last week, this week saw both the Emmy award ceremony and nominees announced for the upcoming BAFTAs on the 18th of February. The big winners for the Emmys were, to no surprise for most of us, Succession and The Bear. The former taking home its third win for Outstanding Drama Series as well as its cast picking up acting awards along with Outstanding Directing.
The Bear was honoured with six awards including Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, Writing and Directing. Additionally, it picked up a further five awards in the Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
Other big winners from the Emmys were Netflix’s Beef, which swept the “limited series” categories with eight wins in total which includes three Creative Arts Awards. Beef picked up Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series as well as acting wins for stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong. The champion of the Creative Arts Awards however was The Last of Us. Coming up short in its nominated categories on the main stage, the post-apocalyptic drama took home eight technical awards including best make-up, visual effects, sound, and picture editing.
As for the BAFTA nominations, Oppenheimer and Poor Things have secured the most with 13 and 11 nominations respectively, with both up for Best Film as well as Leading Actor for Cillian Murphy and Leading Actress for Emma Stone. Other highly nominated films are Killers of the Flower Moon, The Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers and Maestro. Which film do you think will win the most? We eagerly await the Oscar nominations next week!
In other filmic news this week, the new film-turned-stage musical-turned film again Mean Girls hit cinemas to positive reviews and it’s also available to pre-order on physical if you’re into that sort of thing. The soundtrack is also coming in March with the 4K, Blu-ray and DVD release date still yet to be announced. And that’s fetch! (Did I use that correctly?).
Your favourite fictional blue characters after the Smurfs are landing on physical once again in a new and improved way with both James Cameron’s Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water getting four-disc collector’s edition sets with stunning fold-out packaging and over 10 hours of bonus features!
The horror-drama video game Until Dawn is getting a film adaptation helmed by Anabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg, who is also the man behind the DCU’s Shazam movies. Considering that the original cast was comprised of established actors that included Oscar winner Rami Malek, along with some other familiar faces you’ll recognise from the likes of Heroes and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, can we expect them to return to their roles on the big screen? We certainly hope so.
The musical world was rocked by a certain Ariana Grande announcing her seventh studio album. Grande, who has been busy filming the big screen adaptation of Wicked, broke the news on Wednesday, with a release date of March 8th. Following the release of the album’s lead single Yes, And?, the album’s title, Eternal Sunshine (stylized in all lowercase) is inspired by Michel Gondry’s 2004 sci-fi romance Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslett.
